The World Maritime University (WMU) is offering three fully funded PhD fellowships for 2025 as part of an integrated, four-year research program focusing on the maritime green transition. Sponsored by the Orient’s Fond of Denmark, these fellowships are aimed at supporting the energy transition in maritime transportation within West Africa, East Africa, and the Caribbean. Successful candidates will be enrolled, live, and conduct their research at WMU in Malmö, Sweden.

Fellowship package

The PhD fellowships are fully funded, with a generous package that includes:
  • Full tuition fee: Valued at $39,500 USD for students starting in 2025.
  • Monthly stipend: SEK 17,000 per month for the first two years, increasing to SEK 18,000 for the final two years.
  • Conference fees: Coverage for expenses related to attending conferences.
  • Research travel budget: A small budget to support research-related travel.

Research themes and objectives

Applicants must choose one of the three specific research themes related to the maritime green transition in West Africa, East Africa, or the Caribbean.
There are three specific research themes applicants can choose from, all focused on the maritime green transition in West Africa, East Africa, or the Caribbean. Theme 1 covers Sustainability Management in Port and Shipping Companies through ESG. Theme 2 focuses on Green Shipping Corridors (GSCs). Theme 3 explores Port Energy Hubs and Urban-Port Integration.

Eligibility criteria

Candidates need a relevant Master’s degree with a dissertation, strong English proficiency, and must reside at WMU in Malmö for the four-year program starting November 17, 2025. Proficiency in research methods is beneficial, and candidates from developing countries and female candidates are encouraged to apply.

Selection process

Applications are evaluated by the WMU Doctoral Admissions Board based on research proposal quality and academic qualifications.
